The Local Area

York is a thrilling cultural haven surrounded by beautiful rolling countryside, the city itself is a mix of old and new with charming cobbled streets and stunning architecture with York Minster dominating the skyline; there is much to delight. Away from the world class museums such as the Castle Museum, Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum and the Castle Museum. There are numerous events, festivals plus street entertainers that combine to make the city an exciting place to visit.

Pear Tree Barn lies in the delightful conservation village of Askham Bryan (just 5 miles from the centre of York) tucked away amongst a charming group of mid nineteenth century agricultural buildings; the barn was a former granary for one of a number of small farms that lie on the edge of the village.

The location lies just a mile from the two A roads that circle the ancient city of York, with the local Park and Ride into York just 5 minutes drive away. With excellent access to the A64, North, West and East Yorkshire are within easy reach providing a whole range of opportunities from beaches/walks and wildlife/country houses and stately homes/theatres and galleries/shops plus a range of cafes and restaurants located in both villages and towns.

The Vale of York is easily explored, by car, on foot or by bike. For instance at Sutton Bank on the edge of the Hambleton Hills, the Vale spreads out below with the Yorkshire Dales rising up in the distance with a panoramic view that stretches for miles.

As a base for exploring the wider area, Pear Tree Barn, Askham Bryan is an ideal starting point. To the north you will find the charming traditional market towns of Bedale, Easingwold, Helmsley, Northallerton, Ripon and Thirsk each with its own distinctive and welcoming features plus of course the spa town of Harrogate with its grandeur.

The Village

Askham Bryan sits in a rural seting with a 12 Century Church, village pub with a single-track lane leading to farms and barn conversions, yet it is less than a mile from the major roads east-west and north-south.

Westwood Lane

Just yards from Pear Tree Barn the road narrows to a single track lane and a bridle way popular with walkers

Description

Pear Tree Barn has been lovingly restored and converted as holiday accommodation during 2016. The barn is constructed of Yorkshire red brick and timber and these materials feature on the inside as well as the exterior. The old timbers have been retained but are not obtrusive, where the height of the interior allows the original A frame roof timbers add that necessary rustic charm to what is now a modern property. The old granary door has been hung as a reminder of the building's past and, although no longer functioning, it is an attractive link between the cooking and eating space and the main sitting area.

The property is ‘upside down’ with, on the upper floor, a spacious sitting room with adjoining open plan kitchen/dining area accessed by an open plan staircase. The block of four 4ft north-facing feature windows gives unobstructed views onto the Vale of York with the White Horse at Kilburn, some 20 miles away, clearly visible on bright days. The two bedrooms (one x double and one x twin) plus a bathroom and a shower room are located on the ground floor. The rooms are cosy at night and the space is generous for a party of four for whom the property has been designed.
